Sitting posture and spine painAddressing the importance of posture and its immediate reaction to symptoms is an essential part of any treatment of spinal pain. The connection between a habitual poor posture and recent pain is not always clear. We approach sitting posture as an essential part of the solution (versus it being a problem!). It is often the first opportunity for a patient to assume responsibility towards independent control of symptoms. A straight back chair is not the solution to everyone's pain (decreases the arch by 50%)! If maintenance of an arch is indicated for symptom relief, an additional lumbar support (lumbar contour in the backrest, lumbar roll, rolled up towel, etc.) can be used independent of the tilt of the seat. Pain relief, not the diagnosis (e.g. herniated disc, spinal stenosis, scar tissue, fibromyalgia) determines if modification of sitting posture is needed to enhance recovery. At 'Back in Motion', a specific assessment will be performed to accurately select what, and if changes in habitual postures will be beneficial to your recovery. |
