The Mckenzie Method Approach
to
Treatment of Spinal Pain |
 |
At Back in Motion the approach to spinal pain
is the McKenzie Method
(Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spine).
|
Traditionally, examination of movement is performed to establish movement loss and whether the restriction is painful or not. At Back in Motion, the assessment focuses on identifying reproducible, distinct patterns of immediate, patient-reported pain response when the joint(s) are repeatedly tested. This testing is done until a positive/negative pain response occurs with each direction of testing.

The essence for treatment in the McKenzie system is “self treatment.” This requires a lot of work and careful education from the therapist (rather than a lot of orders and instructions). At Back in Motion, patients will be taught regarding underlying anatomy, needed postural and environmental changes, interpretation of their symptoms and management of their flare-ups.
|
To be successful with self-treatment, patients may need more understanding. Understanding leads to commitment, informed decision making, pro-activity and realization of the consequences of one’s actions!

Patients will be provided with accurately selected exercises, specific to his/her musculoskeletal deficits. Follow-up visits are used to further empower the patient and modify/progress their home program to achieve optimal functional outcome. Only when indicated, therapist assisted procedures will be initiated. |
